Army Spec. Michael J. Kalusz, son of Alexander and Wendy Kalusz of Howell, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing the use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
Kalusz is a 2007 graduate of Colts Neck High School and a 2011 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, Pa.
Marine Corps Pvt. Franklin D. Otero, son of Kelly and George Otero of Freehold, earned the title of U.S. Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
For 13 weeks, Otero stayed committed during some of the world’s most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to a Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies.
One week prior to graduation, Otero endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits’ minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented with the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time. Otero is a 2011 graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough.
The Jersey Coast Sport Fliers, an affiliated club of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, will hold its first National Model Aviation Day from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at Dorbrook Park, 209 Route 537 east, Colts Neck. Club members will display differently sized radio-controlled planes and helicopters. Flying demonstrations will be held during the last 15 minutes of each hour.
