Crosswicks Community Association hosts croquet tournament

Residents took to the village green behind the Crosswicks Community House to play croquet Saturday afternoon.
The Crosswicks Community Association created three playing courts in the grass, where teams of six players hit wooden balls with a mallet through hoops called “wickets.” The community association’s second annual Croquet Classic was held from noon to 8 p.m. on July 13.
Players enjoyed the croquet tournament, in which the winners were awarded cash prizes. The event also featured root beer floats, a display of classic cars, family games, cookies and music by the Successful Failures, the Asbury Boys, John McMenamin, Hannah Krupa and Jacob Frye.
Melissa Hoffmann, event chair, said the community association created the Croquet Classic to boost community spirit.
“We wanted to do something that people of any age could participate in and we wanted to take advantage of this wonderful space,” she said.
Mick Chorba won first place in the second annual Croquet Classic. Christopher Quinn took second place and Mark Osman earned third place.
Although storms rolled through the area on Sunday, Ms. Hoffman said, “We lucked out with the weather and were able to have a great day.”
Burlington County Freeholder Director Joe Donnelly said the freeholders get the opportunity to attend a lot of community events but nothing compares to the Croquet Classic.
“I find each one unique in its own special way,” Mr. Donnelly said. “This is truly unique.”
He said the Crosswicks Community Association has been enhancing community life with events like the Croquet Classic since 1919.
