HILLSBOROUGH: College graduates share achievement

Residents earn their degrees

Steven Karl Yarmoska (Hillsborough High, Class of 2009) graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science in engineering from Duke University in Durham, N.C., on May 12. He completed a major in biomedical engineering and minors in chemistry and biology.
Steven was also a member of the Tau Beta Pi honor society and his efforts in independent research allowed him to graduate with departmental distinction.
He was a Pratt Undergraduate Research Fellow in the Biomedical Interferometry and Optical Spectroscopy (BIOS) laboratory. As a Pratt Fellow, Steven assisted on an ex vivo clinical trial with clinical collaborators at Duke Medical Center to non-invasively use near-infrared light to diagnose pre-cancerous conditions in cervical tissue. The results of this study are currently being prepared for publication.
Steven has accepted a position in the M.D.-Ph.D. combined degree program at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Texas at Austin. He plans to pursue his doctoral studies in the ultrasound imaging and therapeutics laboratory.
