Increasing numbers of visitors at Duke Farms has sparked the need for a pedestrian-controlled red light stop signal on Duke Parkway West, Duke Farms Executive Director Michael Catania said at the Hillsborough Township Committee meeting on June 25. The committee members approved a resolution to seek the light.
The upgraded light will replace an automated flashing yellow crossing signal. Mr. Catania said Duke Farms, a nature preserve and sanctuary, has experienced an unexpected number of visitors since increasing public access in May 2012. About half a million visitors have come to Duke Farms, he said.
”We’re trying to do everything we can to make that crossing as safe as possible,” said Mr. Catania, who added that Duke Farms hopes to make changes to its tram crossing next year.
In other items, the committee approved an annual stipend of $1,500 and an hourly salary stipend of $50 for Lucia Bush’s Spanish translation services for the township’s police and other departments. Ms. Bush, the administrative secretary to the Police Chief Paul Kaminsky, will receive the stipends for duties performed outside of typical work hours.
A semi-automated traffic control signal will be installed at the intersection of Route 206 and Valley Road, Lake Drive. The traffic signal will have pedestrian push buttons.
The township authorized the five-year leases of two 2013 Chevrolet Impalas to be used as unmarked police vehicles.
The township issued proclamations to Abigail Karolewski for qualifying to compete in the U.S.A. Gymnastics Level 9 Eastern Championships, and to Jack Panagos for placing first in the 2013 International Junior Golf Tour.
Jennifer Klejst of Troop 60386 also received a proclamation for earning a Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest award.
The Township Committee has canceled its meeting for Tuesday, Aug. 13.
