MANVILLE: Sun shone on seniors’ picnic

Senior Corner column, issue of July 25

After days of rain, the sun shined on the Manville Senior Citizens picnic. We had a new venue this year, the VFW. Sitting under tents, we enjoyed good fellowship and some games.
We feasted on hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue chicken, sausage and peppers, corn, pasta salad, potato salad and cole slaw. Lemonade, iced tea and water were the drinks of choice. Rounding out the day was a cool fruit salad and Italian ice. There was a nice turnout as usual.
The Senior Citizens’ next regular meeting will be on Thursday, Aug. 8. Compassionate Care and Hospice representative Mary Ellen Day and nurse practitioner Therse Prentice will discuss the volunteer program and Cardiac Connections heart program.
The senior citizens meet at 12:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue. Residents of Manville age 50 and older are eligible for membership. Also, persons who do not remain residents of Manville are still eligible for membership.
Canned goods or non-perishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting, as well as soup labels. Bring an item to stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting for members.
Brush and bulk pick-up is ongoing on alternate Tuesdays. Grass can be dropped off at the borough garage on Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon.
