Scooper’s Gourmet Ice Cream officially opened under new ownership May 3 in the Wawa Shopping Center at 104 Hickory Corner Road.
West Windsor residents Dawn Martin and Jayson Nardoza are the co-owners of the establishment.
“It’s totally new ownership,” said Mr. Nardoza, a pastry chef who has been interested in baking since the age of 16. “New everything.”
Ms. Martin said, “I used to own an ice cream parlor in Bordentown, and he owned a bakery in Bordentown. That’s where we met, and we put our sweet stuff together.”
Scooper’s has seating for up to 40 patrons and serves a range of treats, including the award-winning Thomas Sweet ice cream, customized Thomas Sweet ice cream cakes, customized ice cream sandwiches, signature sundaes, Italian ices, premium soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt and sugar-free items.
“Eventually, we would like to add some baked goods and coffees,” Ms. Martin said.
The shop boasts 27 flavors, including Jersey Shore, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Chocolate Chunk.
“I can never stop ordering them,” Ms. Martin said.
The Scooper’s Challenge features “the largest sundae around,” which has 10 scoops of ice cream and five toppings plus whipped cream and a cherry on top. Customers who eat the whole thing will have their picture placed on the wall of fame.
The owners also invite guests to try the Family Night Out Sundae with family, friends, teammates or group partners. The sundae has 15 scoops of ice cream, six toppings, whipped cream and a cherry.
According to Ms. Martin, a lot of people “have taken a liking” to the signature sundaes.
“We serve big sundaes for kids,” Ms. Martin said. “We like to bring in families, teams, groups of kids — all together just to come in and have a really nice time.”
She said the shop is family-oriented with board games to play and birthday parties for kids.
The shop had a number of patrons Saturday, which was National Ice Cream Day. President Ronald Reagan declared every third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day in 1984.
ýFor Jason Perez, of Cranbury, who visits the shop on a regular basis, “every day is National Ice Cream Day.”
“When they opened, we started coming almost every week,” Mr. Perez said.
His favorite item on the menu is the Jersey Shore malt.
“The Jersey Shore is a vanilla ice cream with salted caramel,” Mr. Perez said.
Christi Cayea, of East Windsor, also likes the Jersey Shore flavor.
“It’s because it’s different texture,” Ms. Cayea said.
For Becky Korey, of Cranbury, it’s a tossup between Peanut Butter Swirl and S’mores when it comes to choosing her favorite ice cream flavor.
“This is the best ice cream in town,” Mr. Nardoza said. “I can guarantee you that. You are going to come here and get the best quality ice cream that you are going to get in this area.”
Noting one of the co-owners always will be at the store, he said, “We pride ourselves on service.”
Current hours of operation are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, year-around.
