Hillsborough library program schedule
Mad Science presents two programs for kids on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Hillsborough Public Library, 379 South Branch Road.
In “Digging for Dinos” for ages 3-5 at 2 p.m., kids will be little paleontologists who learn about when dinosaurs lived, what they ate and how scientists know they existed. Kids will participate in a dig for the “fossil remains” of a mystery dinosaur, and cast their own T-Rex tooth.
In “Earthworks” youngsters will take a voyage to the center of the Earth and investigate the process that forms rocks, minerals and gems. Children will take home ultraviolet detectors that they build themselves. The program for kids entering grades K-2 is at 3 p.m., and the program for kids entering grades 3-5 is at 4:15 p.m.
• In the foyer in August, view the collections of Dana Benner (photography) and a display by the Hillsborough High School Color Guard.
• The Friends of the Hillsborough Library have daily book sales. DVDs, CDs and hardcover books are only $1. Paperbacks, records, children’s books and magazines are 25 cents. VHS tapes are free. In August , all children’s books are 20 cents each.
Adult programs (registration required):
• Friday night movie — “42,” the story of baseball’s Jackie Robinson, starring Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman, will be shown July 26 at 7 p.m. It is rated PG-13.
• Groundbreaking Reads — Mark Klingler, scientific illustrator for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, reconstructs ancient animals in their natural habitat through artistic techniques. Families with children ages 10 and older are welcome. Sat., July 27, at 1 p.m.
• Numerology — SuZen RavenHeart will teach simple ways to use numbers and how important they are, even when looking for a new home. Numerology reveals the diverse parts of a personality and how they come together to create you. Tues., July 30, at 7 p.m.
• Raritan Valley Community College advisors will cover topics about the application and admission process, majors and careers, transfer students and paying for college. No registration required. Thurs., Aug. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.
• Afternoon movie — “Admission,” starring Tina Fey, Paul Rudd and Lily Tomlin and rated PG-13, will be shown Aug. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
• Rock & roll – “Under the Streetlamp: Tales from the Doo Wop Era” traces the early history of rock and roll music. The presentation by Classic Urban Harmony will be supplemented with music, video presentations and personal anecdotes. The Crests, Platters, Shep & the Limelites, and Hank Ballard are a few of the personalities that will be covered. Thurs., Aug. 8 at 7 p.m.

Zoo on Wheels (ages 5 and older) — The Philadelphia Zoo will visit the library and bring a variety of animals. Thurs., July 25, at 7 p.m.
• Video animation (ages 7-12 only) — If you are into technology, this JEI Learning Center program is for you. Mon., July 29, at 2 p.m.
• Kindermusik (newborn to 3) — Join Ms. Jenni for music that helps a child develop language, literacy, social and listening skills in a fun, family-friendly setting. Monday, July 29, at 10 a.m.
• Toddler Time for 2’s and 3’s — A story on creeping critters. Tues., July 30, at 10 a.m. No registration required.
• Bugs on the Go! (entering grades K-5 only) — Through a variety of live arthropods as well as pinned specimens, Insectropolis will show the structure, characteristics, and basic needs of organisms. Tues., July 30, at 2 or 3 p.m.
• Butterflies (ages 6 and older) — Rick Mikula, the Butterfly Guy, will unveil the mystery of camouflage and the trickery of disguise that butterflies and moths use to escape predators. Wed., July 31, at 7 p.m.
• Special Storytime (ages 2-6) — Topic: Digging for dinosaurs. Thurs., Aug. 1, at 10 a.m.
• Archeologists ‘Dig’ Egypt — Fun activities about Egypt. Thurs., Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. for kids entering grades K-2 and at 3 p.m. for kids entering grades 3–5.
• Adventure Time marathon (entering grades 6-12) — You’re never too old for Saturday morning cartoons! We’ll experiment with different cereal combos, watch Adventure Time and work on a few crafts. Come dressed as your favorite character and earn double raffle tickets toward a summer reading club prize. Sat., Aug. 3, at 10 a.m.
• Game On! – Bring your game face for a variety of Wii games and board games. Mon., Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. for kids entering grades K-2, and at 3:15 p.m. for kids entering grades 3-5.
• Stories for 4’s, 5’s & 6’s — A fun family storytime on “This Way & That Way” on Mon., Aug. 5, at 10 a.m. No registration required.
• Toddler Time (2- and 3-year-olds) — Introduce books to your child with a story on mighty machines on “Up, Down & All Around “ on Tues., Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. No registration is required.
• Rhyme Time (newborn to 24 months) — 20 minutes of nursery rhyme fun! Tues., Aug. 6, at 10:30 a.m.
• Scavenger hunt (entering grades K-5 only and caregivers) — Work as a team to find hidden treasures in the library. Tues., Aug. 6, at 3 p.m.
• Story & craft (ages 2-6) — Listen to a story about treasure and create a craft to take home. Wed., Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m.
• Children’s play (ages 3-9 and caregivers) — Youth Stages presents “Bugs & Insects & Arachnids…Oh My!” on Wed., Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. Dr. Katy Did uses song and story in the attempt to alleviate fears and enliven the lecture.
• Movin’ Munchkins (ages 3-6) — A creative movement program for child and parent/caregiver! A release/waiver must be signed by the parent or child cannot participate. Forms are available at the Children’s Desk or online. Thurs., Aug. 8, at 10 a.m.
• Baby Songs (newborn to 24 months) — Spend time making music with your little one. Older siblings will not be allowed into this program. Fri., Aug. 9, at 10 a.m.
• Robots (entering grades 6-12) — Robodyssey Systems will show how to program a robot using programming skills in Microsoft Visual Basic. Put new knowledge to the test using a robot in a final competition. Sat., Aug. 10, at 1 p.m.
