HILLSBOROUGH: State money coming for Route 206

Grant intended to help make ‘safe corridor’

Three municipalities along Route 206 in Somerset County will receive $182,912 in state grants to promote safety along designated Safe Corridor highway segments.
The 10-mile stretch of Route 206 between mileposts 60 and 70 are covered. Two-thirds of that is in Hillsborough, between mileposts 63 (Belle Mead) and 69.7 (Somerville line); the municipality would receive $147,118.30.
Montgomery has three miles (milepost 60 to 63.05) and would get $31,547.02. Somerville has less than a quarter-mile and would get $4,246.71.
The Safe Corridor program targets resources to 10-mile segments along highways that have a history of high crash rates. Grants are supported by fines, which are doubled in designated Safe Corridors for a variety of moving violations, including speeding.
Safe Corridors funding is allocated based on crash data, with higher amounts of funding going to areas with the greatest need for more enforcement measures.
Grants can be used by municipalities to purchase enforcement equipment including police vehicles, radar equipment, computer hardware and software, and to pay salaries.
