To the editor:
I hope Congressman Rush Holt takes action to remove the draconian provision authored by Rep. Steve King from the farm bill. King’s provision could likely wipe out all state laws that grant protections to animals in factory farms and dogs in puppy mills, as well as horses and sharks.
On top of the animal welfare measures that could be nullified, a host of state laws that concern food safety and protections for farm workers may not stand a chance either if this section makes its way into the final edition of the farm bill.
Rep. Holt, please work with other members of Congress to strip this harmful section from the farm bill. The Senate was wise enough to exclude it from their version, and the final version should exclude it as well.
Even though you may not be on the committee to decide the fate of the farm bill, please do your best to influence those who will. We’re counting on you.
