Assemblyman targeting traffic light issue

I applaud the Monmouth County freeholders for passing a resolution urging the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to consider installing a traffic signal at Route 33 and Colts Neck Road in Howell. As residents know, Route 33 and Colts Neck Road is an extremely busy intersection that does not have a three-color traffic light. This has created a perilous situation for drivers trying to turn onto Route 33.

Right in the same vicinity as Colts Neck Road is another dangerous intersection, Route 33 and San Marco Boulevard at the Equestra development. At this intersection, Equestra residents and visitors turn into the main entrance of the development. Again, this is another hazardous spot for drivers trying to make a turn.

Since 2011, I have been working with residents of Equestra, representatives of Howell, the Monmouth County freeholders, my legislative colleagues and the DOT to try and find safe, sensible and cost-efficient solutions to these two traffic issues. I have met several times with DOT representatives and Equestra residents to discuss these issues. Further, I have spoken to DOT Commissioner James Simpson to convey my serious concerns about this stretch of road.

At one point it did seem like the traffic light at Route 33 and Colts Neck Road was going to be built. Quick Chek wanted to build a location at this intersection and as part of this building deal they agreed to pay for and construct the traffic light.

However, the Quick Chek plan has been delayed indefinitely due to litigation. This is extremely unfortunate and disappointing, especially to the hundreds of Equestra residents who were hoping the light would slow traffic and result in safer driving conditions.

In my most recent letter, I did ask Commissioner Simpson to investigate the feasibility of the DOT taking responsibility for installing the traffic light with the possibility of reimbursement by Quick Chek after the litigation is resolved. This may not be the best solution, but the interested parties need to start thinking of creative ways to pay for this necessary traffic light.

As far as creating a turning lane at Route 33 and San Marco Boulevard, I am hopeful the DOT will advance this project. After several meetings with residents of Equestra and representatives from the DOT, it is obvious this is a very dangerous intersection, especially for cars trying to turn into the development.

I have been informed by the DOT that this turn lane is presently the subject of further investigation at the DOT. I have stressed to the DOT the importance of addressing this public safety condition.

I want the residents of Equestra and Howell and motorists who drive on Route 33 and Colts Neck Road to know that I am committed to helping to resolve these two major traffic issues. I recognize that both intersections are serious safety concerns. I am hopeful all the interested parties can come together and craft a cost-efficient plan to minimize the danger.
