BORDENTOWN CITY: City taps new clerk, longtime employee

By Jen Samuel, Special Writer
The City Commission appointed Grace Archer to the position of municipal clerk Monday.
After the Aug. 26 meeting, Ms. Archer was assigned cake duty, cutting slices for friends and government officials to celebrate her appointment.
Ms. Archer, a resident of Bordentown City, said, “(The city) has a very strong history, and the residents are very proud of that.”
She said Bordentown is a little city with a lot of charm and noted her favorite community events are the annual Bordentown Street Fair in May and the Cranberry Festival in October. The Cranberry Festival is a little more than a month away, slated for Oct. 5-6.
Ms. Archer first was hired by the city as its payroll clerk in December 1990. She also took on the role of deputy registrar at that time.
Ms. Archer replaced Patricia Ryan, the outgoing city clerk, who she described as her mentor for encouraging her to continue her education. Ms. Ryan’s last day as city clerk prior to retirement was July 31.
”Words can’t express how much we’re going to miss her,” Deputy Mayor James Lynch said of Ms. Ryan.
He continued, “I will miss her.”
While Ms. Ryan served for approximately 40 years, Ms. Archer worked under her wing as deputy clerk for a significant amount of time.
The deputy mayor described Ms. Ryan as a professional, honest and caring person. She is a resident of Borden Township, having moved there from the city a few years ago.
As for her new role as city clerk, Ms. Archer said she would take it on “one day at a time.”
Wednesday, Ms. Archer described her days thus far as city clerk as “busy.”
