MANVILLE: Scouts learn about local government in person

They quiz the mayor, then attend Borough Council meeting

As one of the merit badge requirements for citizenship in the community, Boy Scouts from Troop 193 learned about the local government from town officials.
Mayor Angelo Corradino and Councilman Mark Gregor visited the boys at a recent meeting to discuss how the town is run. Mr. Gregor is also the Troop Committee chairman.
The Scouts listened to the mayor and councilman explain what exactly they do on the Borough Council, the dynamics of the council and how things get done. Afterward, the Scouts were able to ask questions about anything they wanted.
Fourteen Scouts and three leaders attended the Aug. 12 Borough Council meeting to see how those meetings are run. Mayor Corradino welcomed the Scouts and asked they lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The boys listened to the business of the meeting and heard what is happening in Manville and how issues are brought up to the mayor.
First-year Scout Nicholas Mattei came up to microphone during the public portion and asked the mayor about Newark and Onka streets on the corner of Weston School.
”I have been noticing a lot of people running a ton of stop signs,” Nicholas said. “My concern is we have kids riding bikes, and I was riding my bike once, and people running stop signs, and that creates accidents. I think a good use for that intersection would be bigger stop signs.”
The mayor asked Police Chief Mark Peltack to look into it, and the chief thanked Nicholas.
The boys will write a short summary about one of the issues discussed at the meeting and report back to the Scouts.
