To the editor:
The fourth annual Red White and Bang Kids Triathlon was held on Labor Day Monday Sept. 2. It was truly a “labor of love” for the dozens of volunteers that helped made this a safe and successful event.
They spent hours setting up for the race, providing assistance to all of the 100 plus young athletes and cleaning up despite the humidity and threat of rain throughout the race. The athletes swam, biked and ran their way to the glory of finishing the race, some for the first time and others competing in their fourth event.
Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends cheered each and every athlete across the finish line. More than a dozen Special Olympic athletes competed for the first time and were fantastic as they pushed themselves toward the finish line.
My fondest memory of the day was seeing the volunteers, parents, and young athletes running the last few meters side by side with our Special Olympians to encourage them to finish the race.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, sponsors, athletes and supporters that made the event work. This is the kind of community event that makes Lawrence a great place to live.
