Boy Scout William Blakeslee, of Roebling Troop 3, has taken on the challenge of becoming an Eagle Scout.
To earn the rank of Eagle, William must manage a community project, which includes raising funds, performing the work and seeing the project through to completion. Despite the fact that his pursuit is nearly complete, William needs support to finish his project, according to Thomas A. Sahol, the township’s assistant administrator.
”I am currently planning my Eagle Project and I am seeking cash donations for the purchase of needed materials and supplies,” William wrote in a letter asking for community support for his project. “My project is the construction of an exhibit in the restored firehouse in Roebling that is being used as a community center.”
William has chosen to recreate one of the original Roebling Fire Company hose sheds for his Eagle Scout project.
The hose sheds were once part of the landscape in the village of Roebling. They were small structures used before the days of modern motorized fire trucks to house a fire hose cart and other firefighting equipment, according to Mr. Sahol.
”I will be constructing a scale size fire shed that will house a piece of the restored antique fire hose reel,” William wrote in the letter. “It is being done in conjunction with the Roebling Museum and Florence Township.”
Once complete, William’s project will be housed in the display window of the former fire station on Seventh Avenue.
”I am very grateful for any assistance you can provide in assisting me in my Eagle Project,” he wrote. “Any assistance and thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated.”
