Reducing Nervousness in Public Speaking is Topic for MCCC Distinguished Lecture Sept. 25

By Jim Gardner
WEST WINDSOR – Comedian Jerry Seinfeld once famously said:
“According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death…This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”
That need not be the case, according to Kathi Paluscio, associate professor of Communication at Mercer County Community College (MCCC). She will deliver a presentation on “The Secrets to Reducing Nervousness in Public Speaking” as part of MCCC’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Communications Building, Room 107, on the college’s West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
Boiling down fancy academic language and theory to a more human conversation, Paluscio employs the experience that comes with helping nervous peers and students create more than 20,000 speeches over the past 20 years. She focuses on how every person can minimize nervousness while dramatically increasing their clarity and credibility in public speaking.
The lecture will prove to be helpful for every public speaker, from the novice to the veteran of dozens of public appearances, or for the individual with an important presentation on the horizon.
Prior to teaching at MCCC, Paluscio taught communication courses and workshops at Rider and Kean Universities, various Mercer County organizations and schools, and for the New Jersey Department of Labor as an interview trainer/job coach. She received her bachelor’s degree from Kean University, a master’s from Villanova University, and recently completed a Mid-Career Fellowship at Princeton University.
