UPPER FREEHOLD — The Monmouth County Park System will host Walnford Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6 at Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold Township.
The event will bring local history alive through hands-on activities, demonstrations, exhibits, wagon rides and more. The site’s centerpiece — its 19th-century gristmill — will be open for tours.
Children will feel as though they have stepped back in time as they play games from the 18th and 19th centuries, try on 18th-century-style clothing, create historical crafts, or try writing with a quill pen. There is also a visual scavenger hunt guiding guests through an exploration of the site.
Perhaps the most fascinating place to explore is the Walns’ house. Open from cellar to attic, visitors can tour this grand pre-Revolutionary War home at their own pace. On the second floor of the home, guests will enjoy two exhibits: Early Quilts from Walnford, and Read 1862: The Year Through Letters.
Visitors will get a glimpse at history with ongoing demonstrations such as spinning and weaving wool, the New Jersey Blacksmith Association shaping iron, and milling demonstrations in the gristmill. Enjoy the sounds of yesteryear from 1 to 5 p.m. as harpsichord and flute duets echo through the Waln home. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be available 1-5 p.m.
