The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association will hold a meeting at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center, 128 Ocean Ave.
John Olsen will present “Olsen Boat Works and Boatbuilding in Keyport.”
Olsen will talk about his father Olav, and his place in Jersey Shore boatbuilding. Olav founded Olsen Boat Works in 1947 and built over 220 sea skiffs for inshore and offshore fishing during his career.
Many of his boats are still prized and maintained by fishermen from Long Island to New Jersey.
Olsen will also discuss the construction of carvel wooden boats and give a brief history of boatbuilding in Keyport.
Light refreshments will be served at 7:15 p.m.
The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association is dedicated to preserving knowledge and appreciation of Monmouth County’s maritime heritage through programs that teach history and wooden-boat building and boat-handling skills.
On-the-water programs for youths are also available. For more information, visit www.navesinkmaritime.org.
