On Nov. 2 the annual Pulp Adventure- Con will convert the Ramada Inn, Bordentown, into a pulp collectors’ mecca. There will be vendors with rare pulp magazines, movie posters and vintage paperbacks. There are several new publications that are reviving the heroes and tradition of pulp fiction, according to a press release.
Pulp magazines were an inexpensive form of entertainment in the days before the Internet, cell phones and television. They first appeared with Argosy in 1897, flourished in the 1930s, and ultimately died or reinvented themselves in the 1950s, according to the press release.
Characters like the Shadow, Tarzan and Zorro prospered in the pulps, while authors like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Bradbury started their careers in these rough old magazines.
Today, pulp magazines are collected mainly for their connection to the modern comic book and for their lurid cover paintings.
The Pulp AdventureCon will be held at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5. For more information, visit www.boldventurepress.com or email [email protected].
