To the editor:
Regarding the letter “Mayor Kownacki is true to his word” Oct 24, clearly the writer is also enjoying some Kool Aid. The letter writer states “Council asked voters for permission” to exceed the cap and raise taxes 17% in one year. Asked for permission?
The unanimous council’s version of asking for permission is “Option A: pay 17%, Option B: pay 23%”. That’s asking for permission?
Usually, asking for permission in that fashion is the stuff of Hollywood scripts. But in Lawrence Township, it passes as Government and Leadership.
No one is implying that the Mayor is lying. But he is speaking in true politician style when he said “at no point did council propose a budget that exceeds the 2 percent cap.” The Mayor is hanging his hat on a technicality that the town never proposed something (exceeding the cap) that the state prohibits. That’s like saying the town never proposed to line the streets with asbestos. What’s the point of the statement, then?
I’ll hang my hat on new leadership and vote for Max Ramos and Glenn Collins on November 5.
