SOUTH COUNTY: Learn cooking, yoga, carpentry, and more, for free

Public can take courses at high school’s ‘Communiversity’

WEST AMWELL — Back by popular demand at South Hunterdon Regional High School this fall is Communiversity, an educational program for adults that will offer classes in cooking, carpentry, yoga, local history and painting and drawing. The classes, which are free, will be taught by volunteers at the high school on Nov. 19.
Register by Nov. 15. Seating is limited. Refreshments will be served.
”There will be two sessions that night, one starting at 6:30 and one starting at 7:30, so everyone will be able to take two of the five classes being offered,” said Louis Muenker, interim superintendent of the high school. “It’s an opportunity for adults to visit and utilize our school building and have some fun and learn some useful things while they do.
A new offering this year is ‘The Forgotten History of Lambertville,’ which will be taught by local historian Craig Reading.”
Also new at Communiversity will be a yoga class, with Sandy Constable as the instructor. This beginner level class is designed to be an introduction to the relaxing and rejuvenating benefits of yoga. Those who take it should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat (extra mats will be available).
”This will be held in one of our school’s two gyms,” Mr. Muenker said.
Back at Communiversity will be a hands-on carpentry workshop, taught by folks from Niece’s Lumber.
”That’s been a very popular offering at Communiversity in years past,” Mr. Muenker said. “It’s open to both men and women and is good for do-it-yourselfers and homeowners who want to save some money by doing improvements on their own rather than hiring someone to do it.”
The painting and drawing class and the cooking class also have been well-attended in past years.
”A chef from Anton’s at The Swan, a popular local restaurant, will teach the cooking class,” Mr. Muenker said. “There is a $10 charge per student to cover the cost of the food that will be used. That will be held in our family and consumer science classroom.”
Local artist Tony LaSalle will teach the painting and drawing class. “He’ll give amateur artists pointers on how to better express themselves,” Mr. Muenker said.
You can register for classes by calling Kara Dienes at 609-397-2060, ext. 2580, or [email protected].
