FREEHOLD — A motor vehicle stop resulted in multiple drug charges being lodged against a Freehold Borough resident on Oct. 30.
According to police, a car being driven at a high rate of speed on Conover Street was stopped by Patrolman Nicholas Iozzi at 6:19 p.m. on Conover Street.
Police said the driver had music blaring from the vehicle and said the combination of noise and the vehicle’s speed drew the attention of the officer.
Police identified the driver as Issach E. Powell Jr., 27, of Barkalow Avenue.
Lt. Michael Sweetman said that after Iozzi stopped the vehicle, he detected the smell of marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle.
Further investigation led to the discovery of what Sweetman called “a sizable amount of illegal narcotics in the trunk of the vehicle, as well as drug paraphernalia.”
The drug paraphernalia was described as a scale and packaging material.
According to Sweetman, the illegal narcotics are believed to be marijuana, heroin, crack cocaine, powder cocaine and prescription pills.
Sweetman said Powell was not authorized to possess the prescription pills.
Powell was charged with four counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), two counts of possession of CDS with the intent to distribute, possession of CDS with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school (St. Rose of Lima School) and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Sweetman.
He was issued motor vehicle summonses for careless driving and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and a summons for a violation of the borough’s noise ordinance.
Powell was taken to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in default of $375,000 bail with no 10 percent option.
Sweetman said the rental vehicle Powell was driving was impounded. — Clare Marie Celano
