There will be one new member of the Board of Education this January.
Azra Baig will join incumbents Dan Boyle and Harry Delgado on the panel when they are sworn in at the first meeting in January.
Ms. Baig, who ran for a seat on the board for the first time last year, received 3,883 votes, Mr. Delgado, who has been on the board for almost two decades, got 4,541 votes and Mr. Boyle received 4,247 votes in Tuesday’s election.
Mr. Delgado said he wanted another term on the board to help with the search for a new superintendent of the district.
”I was here 10 years ago when we did this,” Mr. Delgado said. “I am the only board member with experience in this.”
Superintendent Dr. Gary McCartney is leaving the district next June after 10 years in the position.
Mr. Delgado assisted the board in hiring Dr. McCartney in 2002-2003 after the retirement of Dr. Sam Stewart.
During his time on the board, Mr. Delgado has served as both vice president and president as well as serving in those capacities on the New Jersey School Boards Association.
He has also been recognized by that organization as a master board member.
Ms. Baig thanked the voters for supporting her bid for office in a statement Wednesday.
”I would like to first thank God for all his blessings,” she said in the statement. “I am truly humbled by the amount of support I have had which began about two years ago when in a span of approximately a week, Arif Patel and Jake Rodriguez, two prominent individuals in South Brunswick, encouraged me run for this position.”
She also thanked board member Deborah Taylor for her years of service to the panel.
”Congratulations to my fellow candidates and much appreciation to board member Deborah Taylor (who did not seek re-election) for her selfless time and dedication,” she said. “You will be missed.”
Ms. Baig said she will focus on keeping the district moving forward and to make sure students have the best school system possible.
As a nurse, she said she will also work with the district to promote health and exercise for the students.
”I look forward to taking on this responsibility and working with the rest of the board members to help make the best decisions for the students of South Brunswick,” she said.
Mr. Boyle could not be reached for comment as of press time on Thursday.
