A Monmouth Junction family escaped injury, but their pet dog was killed Saturday night when fire broke out in their Fox Hill Road home, according to police.
Police received a 911 call at 7:43 p.m. Saturday night from a neighbor reporting smoke coming from a home at 3 Fox Hill Road.
Police officers and the Monmouth Junction Fire Department responded to the scene and discovered smoke coming from the attic and second floor windows of the residence, according to police.
Firefighters did not know that the family was not at home during the time of the fire and forcibly entered the home to search for anyone inside, police said.
As some of the firefighters conducted the search, others battled the blaze on both the first and second floor of the home, quickly containing and extinguishing the fire, police said.
The firefighters conducting the search of the home found the family dog on the first floor and removed him from the residence, but it died from smoke inhalation.
Police said the home had extensive smoke and heat damage and was not habitable, according to police.
The residents were able to stay with family members following the fire.
The Kendall Park, Kingston and North Brunswick #2 fire companies assisted the Monmouth Junction Fire Company.
The Jamesburg and Plainsboro fire companies covered South Brunswick during the incident, police said.
The Monmouth Junction and Kendall Park First Aid squads also responded, and there were no injuries.
Police said that emergency units left the scene after 10 p.m. and that early indications are that the fire was accidental.
Township Deputy Fire Official Mike Soltys is continuing the investigation into the exact cause of the fire.
