More than 60 township families and many staff members participated in an evening of literacy activities Nov. 14.
FLORENCE — The Riverfront School celebrated Family Literacy Night last week in conjunction with National Literacy Month.
More than 60 township families and many staff members participated in an evening of literacy activities Nov. 14.
The event’s highlight was an author presentation and book-signing from Marvin Terban.
Mr. Terban has been called a “master of children’s wordplay” by ALA Booklist, “Mr. English for Kids” by the Children’s Book of the Month Club and Scholastic’s “professor of grammar.”
Mr. Terban is teaches language arts skills to children. He has published 37 books about the English language, three of which have sold more than a million copies each.
Students met Mr. Terban and received tips on grammar and the workings of the English language.
The Florence Township Riverfront School PTO sponsored a scarecrow contest, which was completed by fourth- through eighth-grade classrooms, all based on a literary character of the classroom’s choice. Parents and students voted for their favorites at the event.
Fire Marshal Brian Richardson celebrated his birthday by reading one of his favorite books to the students.
Other guest readers were Assistant Principal Jaime Mungo and fifth-grade teacher Tony Ciccone. Other event highlights were the Florence Township Library, Barnes and Noble and reading tips and lists for all grade levels.
The event was possible with the support and sponsorship of the Florence Township Riverfront School PTO, a PRIDE in education grant through the Florence Township Education Association and staff volunteers and administrators.
