HAMILTON: County bridge project begins

The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has started the replacement of the bridge on Sweetbriar Avenue (County Route 649) over Miry Run in Hamilton.

   HAMILTON —The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has started the replacement of the bridge on Sweetbriar Avenue (County Route 649) over Miry Run in Hamilton.
   The bridge,s located one-half mile east of Whitehead Road, was deemed “structurally deficient” with a sufficiency rating of 30 out of 100, according to a county press release.
   The ratings reflect deteriorated conditions of the structural components.
   Work began on the bridge Nov. 6. Officials said in the release the work is anticipated to be complete in 135 calendar days, weather permitting.
   Signs have been installed informing drivers that Sweetbriar Avenue will be closed to through traffic at the bridge for the duration of the project. The detour route for this project is Whitehead Road to East State Street to Klockner Road to Sweetbriar Avenue and reverse for the other direction.
   The existing structure was a three span, concrete t-beams supported on concrete piles, according to the release.
   The replacement structure will be a single span, pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge supported on steel piles and on cast-in-place pile cap substructure. The new bridge will have two lanes, two shoulders, one sidewalk and four-rail steel open bridge railing.
    Cast-in-place concrete approach slabs, sleeper slabs and relief slabs will be constructed.Marbro Inc., of Montclair, was the successful low bidder at $1,437,117. The contract was awarded on Sept. 12.
