WASHINGTON (November 25, 2013) – Unity Bank has provided a $2,000 grant to Warren County Habitat for Humanity (WCFHH) to help renovate a West Washington Avenue home for a local family. Bank employees also intend to volunteer at the site, which is the 11th Warren County home built or renovated by the non-profit organization, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
“The home will be owned by a very hard working partner family and their two year old son,” said WCHFH President Donna Detrick. “After losing employment at one point and accumulating medical debt, our partner family faced the possibility of never owning a home of their own in a safe neighborhood. Unity Bank and our community partners are helping to make a dream come true for this family.”
Habitat for Humanity affiliates are local grassroots organizations comprised of concerned citizens that come together to address the problem of poverty housing in their community. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, affiliates build or rehabilitate simple, decent housing with the help of prospective homeowner families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at cost and are financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving fund that is used to continue Habitat’s work. Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” into building their house and the homes of others.

The bank’s donation will help support electrical renovations needed for the home. WCHFH is supported by various fundraisers as well as a Habitat store in the Tractor Supply mall at 390 Route 57 West in Washington, which sells used furniture and building materials.
“We are getting ready to start work on our 12th home in the county, which will be located in Independence Township,” said Detrick. “We hope Unity Bank’s example will encourage more businesses to consider supporting the fight against poverty housing and homelessness because in a County like Warren, corporate support is very important to the future of our community.”
