Cash, a digital camera, an iPod and a bluetooth device were among the items taken from nine cars that were entered in the Colonial Heights neighborhood overnight between Nov. 19 and Nov. 20, according to police Sgt. Joseph Amodio.
The cars were parked outside their owners’ homes on Lake Drive, Bunker Hill Avenue, President Avenue, Lakedale Drive, Nathan Hale Avenue and Polk Avenue, Sgt. Amodio said. All of the cars were rummaged through, but items were taken from only a few of them, he said.
”We can’t stress enough how important it is to lock your car,” Sgt. Amodio said. “We have to remove that opportunity to enter the cars. Make sure there is no set of spare keys (to that car or another car parked in the driveway) in it.”
Meanwhile, police are looking into whether a Trenton resident who was stopped by police at 3:14 a.m. Nov. 20 may be involved in the car break-ins, he said. There were other men in the car — which had been reported stolen from a Pennsylvania resident — who were with him when it was stopped.
Jahmeer Green, 19, of Trenton, was charged with receiving stolen property, obstruction of justice and eluding police, after police chased the car in which he was riding from Lawrence into Trenton, Sgt. Amodio said.
A police officer saw a suspicious car on Brunswick Pike at Lakedale Drive around 3 a.m. Nov. 20, Sgt. Amodio said. The officer was driving on Brunswick Pike and the car in which Mr. Green was riding was stopped at the jughandle on Lakedale Drive.
The driver made a left-hand turn out of the Lakedale Drive jughandle while the traffic light was red, and headed towards Trenton. The police officer had determined the car had been reported stolen Nov. 18 from a Pennsylvania resident, and gave chase to stop it, Sgt. Amodio said.
The chase continued into Trenton and was halted when the car struck a parked car on Princeton Avenue, he said. Four or five men jumped out of the car and fled, but Mr.Green was apprehended. Police have recovered evidence that may help them to identify the other suspects, Sgt. Amodio said.
