A rabid raccoon was reported in the area of Carter Road and Lawrence Road last week, according to the Lawrence Township Health Department.
The raccoon appeared to be ill and exhibiting possible signs of rabies. After it was captured, it was tested by the New Jersey State Health Department Laboratory and found to be positive for rabies.
It is important for public health reasons to determine if anyone was in contact with the raccoon. Contact the Lawrence Township Health Department at 609-84407092 if you know of any human or domestic pet in contact with the raccoon.
Rabid animals are usually either vicious and aggressive, or act dazed and are partially or totally paralyzed. They often have trouble walking and may be appear to be “drunk.” People should stay away from all wild and stray domestic animals that are aggressive or appear to be sick.
Some wild animals, such as raccoons, skunks and groundhogs, may be able to infect humans even though they appear to be normal. These animals should be avoided at all times.
Because rabies has been identified in the area, it is important for residents to make sure their cats and dogs have had rabies vaccinations and are licensed. Please check the pet’s records to verify that their rabies vaccination is current.
For more information, call the Lawrence Township animal control officer at 609-844-7092, or the health officer at 609-844-7089.
