MONTGOMERY — Police are enforcing a new speed limit in front of the high school.
A recently passed Somerset County ordinance created a reduced speed zone for the stretch of road in front of Montgomery High School. The speed limit on the portion of Route 601/Great Road in front of Montgomery High School has been reduced from 50 mph to 35 mph when children are present.
The presence of children is defined as “during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway, or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours,” according to the ordinance.
This is currently in effect and the county has posted signs. The Montgomery Township Board of Education in cooperation with Somerset County and Montgomery Township initiated the change in the interest of safety.
County Freeholder and Montgomery resident Mark Caliguire said, “In response to a request from our school board, I was happy to work with the county engineering staff and Montgomery Township to get this done expeditiously in the interest of the safety of our high school children.”
Montgomery Mayor Ed Trzaska stated, “I would like to thank Freeholder Caliguire, the county engineering team, and the Montgomery Board of Education for their partnership on this important issue. We need to constantly look for ways to improve the safety of our school zones and this is a good step forward.”
The mayor said he and his Township Committee colleagues have been working on establishing a more proactive relationship with the local school board.
”Even though our primary roles in town are different, there are so many projects, like this one, where collaboration between our teams is essential,” Mayor Trzaska said. “We will be designating one of our members as liaison to the Board of Education for 2014 and would welcome them to do the same.”The speed limit on Route 601 from Cherry Valley Road to Route 518 is 45 mph. Along Route 601 from Route 518 to Route 206 it is 50 mph, with the exception of the new reduced 35 mph speed zone in front of the high school.
