WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pennsylvania — Each December, thousands gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s Christmas Day river crossing. During the event, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by Gen. Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats.
This year’s reenactment is scheduled for Dec. 25 at 1 p.m. Those who cannot attend on Christmas can watch a full dress rehearsal on Dec. 8 from noon-3 p.m. (actual crossing time approximately 1 p.m.).
During the dress rehearsal, the troops row across the river in uniform just as they do on Christmas. And, additional activities and demonstrations take place throughout the historic village. Cost to attend the dress rehearsal is $8 for adults, $4 for children 5-11, and free for those under 5.
The Christmas Day crossing is free. Proceeds from the dress rehearsal support future programs in the park.
On Dec. 7, the Friends of Washington Crossing Park will host “A Night of REBELry” from 7-11 p.m. at the park’s new visitor’s center. This fundraiser will feature hors d’oeuvres, food stations, an open bar, a live band, dancing, a historic reenactor encampment, musket salutes and more.
Cost is $100 per person or $175 per couple. Those who attend the fundraiser also receive free access to a tented, VIP viewing area during the Christmas Day crossing, complete with hot beverages and snacks. Call 215-493-4076 to find out how to get tickets.
Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit educational and historical programming in the park.
Washington Crossing Park is located at the intersection of Routes 32 and 532. Individuals with disabilities who need special assistance or accommodations to participate in this event should call 215-493-4076.
