Council also continues discussion about parking problems

STOCKTON — Borough Council has formally requested Hunterdon County to investigate taking over animal control services from the borough.
The council passed a formal resolution to that effect at its Dec. 9 meeting, Borough Clerk Michele Hovan said, and sent it to the county administration.
”The resolution asks the county to do a feasibility study on whether the county could take over animal control services from us,” Ms. Hovan said.
The borough suggested the county seek state funding for the feasibility study, she added.
Ms. Hovan said the borough hopes the county will take over the animal control services “because the greater number of mandates on animal control services today, as compared to years ago,” make providing those services financially and administratively onerous for a town as small as Stockton.
Continued at the Dec. 9 meeting from its November session — and expected to continue in the months ahead, Ms. Hovan said — was council’s discussion on how to deal with the shortage of parking in town. The problem is most acute on weekends, since Stockton attracts many visitors.
”No definite direction has been taken by council on this yet, but the parking problem is a big one, especially on weekends,” Ms. Hovan said.
Alternatives continuing to be discussed, she said, include construction of a parking lot, installation of meters on some streets and/or setting a time limit, such as two hours, on some parking spaces in town.
