MILLSTONE — The township’s fire company is seeking volunteers willing to give back to their community.
Currently, the staff maintains 21 active volunteers, according to fire officials.
Ideally, the township fire company is looking to recruit between six and eight additional volunteers in 2014 with the goal of boasting between 25 and 30 active volunteers.
Larry Cier, of the fire company’s membership committee, and Chief John Fiore, both described serving as a volunteer as a great way to assist neighbors and their community in times of emergency.
While most would think the fire company responds solely to fires, firefighters are often called to car accidents, which includes extricating occupants of a vehicle and stabilizing the scene for everyone’s safety.
In addition, fire officials said members can expect to respond to weather-related emergencies such as when power lines fall across roadways or when lightning strikes a home.
Specifically, the fire company is looking for residents who enjoy working with their hands, have a willingness to learn new skills and can respond to emergency calls when they are home and available.
Fire officials acknowledged it can be hard work at times, but also an opportunity to really “make a difference”. While there is no paycheck, there is a huge payoff in the pride and satisfaction of helping others.
There are no out-of-pocket costs to members to belong to the fire company.
In addition, all training, equipment and uniforms/gear is provided by the fire company at no charge to the member. New volunteers are required to pass a medical examination, paid for by the fire company, and pass a background check.
Millstone Volunteer Firefighters come from all walks of life, with different skills and jobs, according to a fire company release.
However, despite this diversity, it is the common purpose of the fire company to protect lives and property that bring together their members to work as one team. Minimum age to join is 18 and up. The department also boasts several early retirees and military veterans who have joined and are active volunteers.
In 2013, the Millstone Township Fire Company completed 75 years of continuous volunteer service to the community. Fire officials described the fire company as a “progressive” fire company, always looking to adopt best practices and acquire the latest technology/equipment available to the fire service.
The fire company also sponsors events like an annual dinner/dance and family picnic to thank its members and families for their service and support as well as participating in community events, like Millstone Day.
Anyone interested in becoming a Millstone Fire/Rescue volunteer is encouraged to visit the fire company’s website at www.millstonefire.com to learn more and if interested, complete/submit the preliminary application.
The membership committee will then meet with interested residents and help them decide if being a volunteer firefighter with Millstone Fire is a good fit.
