Gallery features ‘Photography as an Element’

“Queue” by Jill Kerwick “Queue” by Jill Kerwick Each year, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County invites an artist or group of artists to curate its first show of the year in its gallery at 33 Monmouth St., Red Bank.

The annual invitational exhibit for 2014 is “Photography as an Element,” curated by Robert and Elisabeth McKay of McKay Imaging Studio and Gallery.

The show includes images by Mary Cooper, Gary Dates, Jill Kerwick, John Kochansky, Dee Ann McCarthy, El McCarthy, Tom McCarthy and Holly Suzanne Rader.

“For some time now, artists have been using photography in a variety of ways to create works of art,” the McKays said in a statement. “This show is a sampling of some of the very talented people in our area who have been doing just that.

“Some use photos to create collage. Others depend on the technological advances of the day to create fanciful scenes that had previously only existed in their minds. Some create these imaginary scenes in real life with real objects — and then crop their creations into photographs.”
