To the editor:
We are writing in support of Jo Butler’s candidacy for continuing membership on Princeton’s governing council. Her service to date, both on Borough Council prior to consolidation and on the new council post-consolidation has been indispensable.
We love her life story coming from a conservative mid-west background, developing her own strong progressive convictions, and ultimately finding her way to Princeton to become part of a like-minded community. This independent streak colors the way she serves our town she is not afraid to speak truth to power and the consequences are not always warm fuzzy feelings for everyone involved, but she gets results, and there can never be any doubt about how much she loves the community, the way she puts herself on the line to protect our best interests.
Jo has been a staunch proponent of zero tax increases throughout her time as a public servant here; she has pushed tirelessly for openness on issues of police oversight and cooperation between our police force and the university’s public safety department. She was almost single-handedly responsible for council taking a hard look at the long-standing relationship between the municipality and our consultant attorneys, and getting needed revisions to their contract.
We urge our fellow Princetonians to embrace the unique contribution Jo makes to council, and to vote to keep her compelling voice a part of the ongoing discussion on how to make Princeton the best community it can be.
