HILLSBOROUGH: Cubs crown victors in Pinewood Derby

More than 40 boys were off to the races when Hillsborough’s Cub Scout Pack 189 held its annual Pinewood Derby at St. Joseph’s Church and Parish

   More than 40 boys were off to the races when Hillsborough’s Cub Scout Pack 189 held its annual Pinewood Derby at St. Joseph’s Church and Parish.
   Tiger, Bear, Webelos I, and Arrow of Light Scouts participated, with trophies awarded for first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each division in the Jan. 11 event. A grand finale was also held, with the winners from each Scouting level racing for this year’s overall championship. In addition, trophies were also presented to the Scouts whose entries were judged as Fastest Looking Car, Best Looking Car, Most Realistic Looking Car, and Most Imaginative Car.
   The Pinewood Derby was organized by Bear Dens 2 and 4. Pack 189 assistant Cubmaster Paul Robuck served as master of ceremonies, keeping the lively audience informed and entertained with play-by-play racing commentary.
   Support from Boy Scout Troop 489 helped set up, organize games, manage the test track, and provided training on knot tying.
   ’This year’s winners from the Tiger division were: Garrett Robuck, first; Connor Schwarz, second; Mark Ward, third. Winners from the Bear division were: Jimmy Marvits, first; Erik Robuck, second; Christopher Demetrio, third. The winners from the Webelos I division were: Connor Lydon, first; Kavish Nagarajan, second; Maysen Lane, third The winners from the Arrow of Light division were: Jack Marvits, first; Landen Wynston, second; Tim Kelly, third.
   The grand finale pitted the four division winners in a series of six races, again rotating lanes to keep the competition as even as possible. Arrow of Light Scout Jack Marvits captured the overall title. Tiger Scout Garrett Robuck was second and Bear Scout Jimmy Marvits was third.
   Luke Laifer won the competition for Fastest Looking. Jared Rosenthal won the competition for Most Imaginative. Marco Del Toro won the competition for Most Realistic. Matthew Kent won the award for Best Looking Car.
