A uniquely intuitive musician, guitarist Michael Notarangelo can be heard playing his own instrumental compositions at Karla’s restaurant in New Hope every Saturday night.
He also has performed at J.B. Kline’s in Lambertville and many other venues throughout the area.
Tomorrow (Friday) night, the Flemington area resident will be joined by cellist Samuel Haines, with whom he has performed regularly for the past year and a half, at the Flemington Elks Lodge, located at 165 Route 31, Flemington.
They’ll be playing compositions Mr. Notarangelo has written especially for the guitar and cello.
”I started out writing songs just for the guitar, 30 years ago,” Mr. Notanangelo said Monday. “The sound of the guitar itself is my inspiration. I’ll start with an idea something will put into my head and keep with it on the guitar until I have a finished piece.”
His desire to play the acoustic guitar was sparked by listening to Neil Young’s “Harvest” album, released in 1972.
The idea of composing pieces for the guitar and cello duo began to grow some time later, after he heard Nick Drake’s “Cello Song.”
”I met Sam Haines a few years ago and we started practicing together regularly,” he said. “I’d been wanting to bring in some other instrumental voices to the music I was writing.”
Mr. Haines studied music theory and composition at Mansfield University.
Said Mr. Notarangelo, who is a self-taught musician: “I’m working on CD now that’s just guitar. The plan is to do another CD, adding more instruments.”
