Lady Vikings’ bowlers win second straight GMC title

JOVELLE TAMAYO A s part of a weekend of championships, South Brunswick High School’s girls bowling team brought home its second consecutive Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Tournament title on Feb. 7 at Carolier Lanes, defeating neighboring North Brunswick Township High School, 2-0, in the finals.

The Lady Vikings, who lost just once during the regular season, outscored the Raiders, 935-894, in the first game and 947-903 in the second game. Brianne Font rolled a pair of 200-plus games (212 and 215) to lead her team. Amy Caruso, the GMC individual champion, went 182 and 180. Both Font and Caruso have qualified for the NJSIAA individual tournament as well. Coach Tara Burniston’s team adds the GMC championship to the Central Jersey Group IV crown it won on Feb. 1. The first-place finish qualified the Lady Vikings for the team Tournament of Champions, which was scheduled for Feb. 10. Font and Caruso again led the way at the sectionals, rolling series of 604 and 568 pins, respectively.

Adrianna Angelhone, Lucy Dienes and Kristin Krier are all dependable keglers, and each is capable of having a 200-plus pin game. Font is the team’s lone senior.

The loss in the finale for North Brunswick, which put together a solid 15-2 campaign, was its third against South Brunswick this winter. Prior to the season, Raiders coach Paul LaMagra acknowledged that the Lady Vikings were the team to beat.

“Beating South Brunswick is kind of a mental hurdle that our team has to overcome,” the coach said.

The Lady Vikings will again be the team to beat in 2015, but North Brunswick will lose only senior Kate Lonczak to graduation. The four-year starter rolled six 600-plus series and averaged in the 190s. Key contributors Elizabeth Ruffe, Amanda Scharf and Imari Perez will all return. Ruffe surpassed the 600 mark for a series on five occasions, and she had a high game of 268 pins.

Boys bowling

South Brunswick’s boys, meanwhile, took first place in the Central Jersey Group IV sectional on Feb. 8, also held at Carolier Lanes. The Vikings totaled 3,036 pins to finish 44 pins ahead of runner-up Freehold Township High School.

Alex Sorge topped the Vikings and the field with a 717 series, including a high game of 267 pins, as South Brunswick picked up 1,038 pins in its third game to take over first place. Kris Kimberlin rolled a 668, and Tyler Kohutanycz, Charles Zaabadick and Matt Dalton all surpassed the 500-pin mark for their series.

Indoor track and field

South Brunswick also had a successful weekend on the track, winning the Central Jersey Group IV sectional with 66.66 points, well ahead of second-place Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Winners for the Vikings were Elijah Suggs, who crossed the line first in the 55-meter dash in 6.74; Morgan Murray, who won the 800 with a time of 1:58.08; and Juan Baxter, who took the 55 hurdles in 7.64.

Coach Chris Ruskie noted that his team’s depth played a key role in the Vikings carrying the day. Matt Tamasi took second at 800 (1:59.88), Alex Kainer was third in the 55 hurdles (7.88), and Jeremy Rodriguez and Kevin Wainczak tied for fourth in the pole vault (12-0). Tyler Sanders took sixth place in the 1,600 (4:33.43), while Ryan Aug was fifth in the 3,200 (9:57.55). Erich Kaiser finished sixth in the shot put (46-1).

The Lady Vikings, meanwhile, finished third in the girls Central Jersey Group IV sectional.

Aspen McMillan won the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.51, and she was second in the 55 dash (7.36). Desirae Osley won at 400 meters with a time of 58.90, and she was fifth in the 55 dash (7.54).

McMillan and Osley combined with Imani Man and Rochelle McDonald to finish fourth in the 4×400 (4:09.54), and Zyjira Thomas finished fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.77).

The Old Bridge Sayrewoods South Men’s League (SWSML) 30-plus Baseball League is seeking new players for the upcoming 2014 season, its 21st consecutive season.

The Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation is seeking teams for its annual
Board of Chosen Freeholders’ Basketball Tournament, which starts in early March.
Games are played Monday to Thursday at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and will
be held at the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical School located at 21 Suttons Lane
in Piscataway.
The tournament will consist of four divisions:
Youth Division No. 1: Boys and girls ages 10 and under
Youth Division No. 2: Boys and girls ages 12 and under
Youth Division No. 3: Boys and girls ages 13-14
Youth Division No. 4: Boys and girls ages 15-17
Registration, a $75 per-team entry fee and rosters are due by Feb. 21 at the Middlesex
County Office of Parks and Recreation in New Brunswick.
