District schools will be open this Monday, President’s Day, following a string of weather related closings this winter.
In a unanimous vote, the South Brunswick Board of Education amended its 2013-2014 School District Calendar due to the closings that have been called by weather conditions in the area during the school year.
As a result, the district will be open for business as usual on President’s Day, Feb. 17.Schools Superintendent Dr. Gary McCartney presented the item during his Superintendent’s Report at the bi-weekly meeting Monday night.
He said that this year’s calendar contained 181 days of education, one scheduled day in excess of the state requirement. Therefore, he was able to safely recommend that the one extra day be cancelled from the schedule.
Bad weather situations had forced the district to close their doors on Dec. 10, Jan. 3, and 22, and Feb. 3 and Feb. 5.
The changes in the calendar approved Monday will also provide for instruction on April 21, May 17, 23, and 27.
In addition, June 26 has been designated as a “staff only” day by the board.
”The big obstacle is the date set for the graduation ceremony,” Dr. McCartney said. “This is caused by the fact that the ceremony is held off site ( at the Sun Bank Arena in Trenton) and trying to change these arrangements are very difficult. I urge all students and parents of the district to make note of these changes.”
All school buildings and the district web site have sent out notices for the district residents to be aware of the change.
”Maybe I should use the auto-dialer to make the district aware of this change.” McCartney said at the end of his presentation on this issue.
