Leshawn Bivens, 21, of Trenton, has been charged with six counts of burglary, one count of theft and one count of hindering apprehension for allegedly entering six parked cars overnight between Feb. 16 and Feb. 17, according to police Lt. Joseph Amodio.
Mr. Bivens allegedly entered three cars that were parked on Foch Avenue and three that were parked on Lannigan Drive. All of the cars were unlocked, Lt. Amodio said.
A Foch Avenue resident heard a noise and observed someone in his car around 5:15 a.m. Feb. 17, Lt. Amodio said. The resident noticed that the driver’s side door was open and when he went to investigate, he found a man bending over inside the vehicle.
The man stood up and then fled, Lt. Amodio said. An alert was sent out to the police officers on patrol to be on the lookout for the would-be burglar. A few minutes later, Mr. Bivens was stopped by a police officer on Darrah Lane. The victim identified him as the man who was inside his car, which had been parked in the driveway.
Mr. Bivens was charged with six counts of burglary for entering the cars, and one count of theft for taking cash from one of the cars parked on Foch Avenue. He was charged with hindering apprehension for giving police a false name.
Police are looking into whether Mr. Bivens was involved in the break-in of cars parked on Ditmars Avenue, Villanova Drive, Polk Avenue, President Avenue, Glenview Drive and Mayflower Avenue during the same timeframe, Lt. Amodio said.
Mr. Bivens was taken to the Mercer County Corrections Center on $22,250 bail with a 10-percent option.
