Four businesses disrupted
MONROE — Recent heavy snowstorms have taken their toll on the region, including the destruction of a township shopping plaza.
Monroe Township Police responded to the Park Plaza Shopping Center located at 475 Spotswood Englishtown Road just after 9 p.m. Feb. 13 on a report of a building collapse.
Officers arriving on the scene found the collapsed section of the shopping center housed the Texas Road Pharmacy, Bella Italia Pork Store, Luigi’s Restaurant and Monroe Liquors.
Police said officers arrived on scene and found the roof to be partially caved in with the front walls bowing outwards.
According to police, the pharmacy was closed at the time but other businesses were open and evacuated.
Electric utility companies PSE&G and JCP&L arrived on the scene with the Monroe Township Fire Departments and a Monroe Township Construction official.
Electric and gas service was shut off and the building was deemed unsafe by the Construction Official.
Police did not report any injuries caused by the collapse or in the response of emergency crews to the scene.
Although still under investigation, recent snowstorms have caused several roof collapses in the region.
The cause of this collapse is under investigation and this section of the Shopping Center is closed indefinitely, officials said.
