A summer recreation program for children of Lambertville, West Amwell and Stockton is ready to roll now that that Lambertville City Council has given its go-ahead to the initiative.
The program will be for children, 7 to 12, and held at Ely Park in Lambertville from June 23 to July 27.
Council voted in favor during its Feb. 18 meeting, Clerk Cindy Ege said.
Ed McCaffrey, chairman of the city’s Recreation Commission, said the program will run from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.
”There will be basketball, flag football and soccer,” Mr. McCaffrey said.
”There will be games, plus time for instruction on things like ball handling and dribbling. There also will be time for ‘choice activities.’ Those will be activities, like kickball or relay races, the children will choose for themselves. The last hour of each day will be for those choice activities.”
Mr. McCaffrey said the cost of the program is expected to be about $50 per child.
”We’re getting our counselors together now,” he said. “We’ll be putting out notices soon, on the city website and elsewhere, on how to sign up. We think it’s going to be an opportunity for good, healthy play and exercise for youngsters in our area.”
Mr. McCaffrey credited Recreation Commission member Jeff Reilly “with doing a lot to help us bring this kind of program back. It’s been about 10 years since we had something like this here. Jeff is a big reason why.”
Mr. Reilly is a physical education teacher at West Amwell Elementary School.
