Solo Exhibit of Mosaic Portraiture by Sandhi Schimmel Gold at Don’t Toss It

By Pamela Chamberlain
March 5, 2014 – Lambertville, NJ – Don’t Toss it is pleased to present Mosaic Portraits, a solo exhibition by renowned upcycling artist Sandhi Schimmel Gold. In this exhibition, Schimmel Gold presents a series of portraits that reflect society’s obsession with beauty in advertising. She synthesizes the barrage of beauty images that bombard us daily to reimagine and reuse them in her portrayal of women of all ages and races.
"My portraits are a purposeful intermix of images and text -found in advertising: on postcards, packaging, junk mail, etc. I hand cut, sort and manipulate thousands of pieces to assemble a newly envisioned portrayal of beauty – an eclectic and highly textured portrait, utilizing materials that would otherwise go to waste,” explained Schimmel Gold.
Born with Synesthesia, Schimmel Gold says, “It is a synthesis of more than one sense – in my world, words, numbers and sounds are distinct colors. My brain is like a projector placing images on a blank canvas. My work takes shape as an algebraic equation and mathematical progression.”
Schimmel Gold started mixing paints before she could write her name. In many ways, she is self-taught. She received a bachelor of arts in psychology and fine art from the State University of New York; has taken post-graduate studies at Arizona State University and the University of California, Los Angeles; and completed independent studies in New York City and abroad.
Schimmel Gold is based in Virginia and has exhibited in museums, galleries and corporations both nationally and internationally. She is represented by the following galleries: Chasen Galleries in Richmond, VA; Arts & Artisans in Chicago, IL; and The Loft at Liz’s in Los Angeles, CA. Her work has been selected for the Women’s Caucus for Art.
Don’t Toss It is located at 204 N. Union Street, Lambertville, New Jersey. The gallery at Don’t Toss It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sandhi Schimmel Gold’s work will be on exhibit until June 1, 2014.
