State Department of Transportation officials have announced a priority repair project to rehabilitate the Weston Causeway bridge over the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Franklin Township, Somerset County.
The bridge connects Weston Canal Road in Franklin to South Main Street (County Road 533) in Manville via Wilhousky Street/Manville Causeway.
The $1.7 million, state-funded project will repair the structurally deficient bridge using a timber-and-steel structure and a timber deck with an asphalt overlay. The bridge is located in a historic district and will be rehabilitated using state Historic Preservation Office standards to maintain its historic appearance with modern structural design and strength.
The contractor, Joseph Sanzari Construction, is scheduled to close the bridge on Wednesday, March 12.
A detour will be posted using Schoolhouse Road, Elizabeth Avenue, County Route 514/Amwell Road and Millstone River Road. Variable message signs will be used to alert motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes.
The DOT anticipates the project to be complete by early summer. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
