MANVILLE: Nurse will talk to senior citizens about strokes

Senior Corner column, week of March 6

The Manville Senior Citizens meet on the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue.
The next regular meeting will be March 13. Guest speaker will be registered nurse Kathleen Iannuzzo from St. Peter’s University Hospital discussing heart problems and strokes.
Due to the weather, the February meeting was postponed to Feb. 20. Guest speakers were Keith Gardner, supervisor of buildings and grounds, and Business Administrator Kim Clelland for the Manville School District.
They went over the criteria for the determination for closing school or having a delayed opening. Mr. Gardner works in conjunction with Borough Administrator Gary Garwacke, Public Works Director Phil Petrone and School Superintendent Johanna Ruberto to view weather reports and the consequence of weather-related travel. Many factors, primarily health and safety impact this decision. Alert-Now system is used to notify students, teachers and employees of the decision.
Phil Petrone addressed the snow shoveling issue. Snow is to be removed from cars and sidewalks. Cars should be removed from the street so plowing can be done and put back once curb-to-curb plowing has been completed. Do not throw the snow into the street when you are shoveling.
Ken Otrimski and Carrie Couch from the Office of Emergency Management went over the emergency notification systems for the town. We have radio station 1700 AM and the Code Red phone alert system, which will notify you on your land phone or cell phone. You can also register with the borough to receive alerts via e-mail.
Lisa Carra from the Manville Senior Center handed out calendars for the coming year and announced that there will be new exercise classes. More information to come on this.
’The Executive Board will continue to hold meetings on the Wednesday prior to the regular meeting.
Residents of Manville age 50 and older are eligible for membership. Also, persons who do not remain residents of Manville are still eligible for membership. Dues for new members are $20, which includes 2014 dues and registration.
Nick Trilone is accepting 2014 dues of $10 for members. Dues for 2014 must be paid by Feb. 13.
Canned goods or nonperishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting. Remember to bring one item per member to stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting for members, starting at 11:30 a.m.
