Pair endorsed for Township Committee by local party committee
Incumbents Gloria McCauley and Doug Tomson will run for re-election to the Township Committee. Mr. Tomson, 32, is a lifelong resident of Hillsborough. He was first elected in 2011. Ms. McCauley is seeking her third three-year term. Both are Republicans.
Ms. McCauley and Mr. Tomson were the only two candidates to be screened by the township party committee on March 4.
Mr. Tomson is the director of government affairs for the N.J. Realtors Association. Ms. McCauley is a real estate salesperson.
Candidates must file nominating petitions by Monday, March 31, to gain a place on the June 3 primary election ballot.
The incumbents expect to be unopposed.
Mr. Tomson is completing his first term on Township Committee. He has just completed his first two months as mayor. He said, “Besides being a husband and father, serving Hillsborough has been the greatest privilege of my life.” Ms McCauley said she looked forward to continuing her work to build a top-of-the-line park and recreation facility at the former Belle Mead GSA depot site.
”Working with the county, we’ve come a long way toward realizing our dream of a multi-use park for all sorts of activities, from jogging and bicycling to baseball and softball under lights,” she said.
Mr. Tomson reminded listeners that Hillsborough was rated by one website as the 19th safest town in New Jersey, as a Top 10 town by NJ Monthly, and as the 16th best town in America by Money magazine.
In a release, the mayor stressed the Republican message of fiscal responsibility.
”Taxes are near the level they were six years ago,” he said. “We keep the municipal budget under the 2 percent (tax levy) cap every year without gimmicks. We don’t take the allowable exceptions, such as for pension payments, and we don’t borrow money to pay for routine expenses. So, there are no hidden costs for future taxpayers. We will keep looking for savings wherever we can find them. Keeping Hillsborough affordable is our number-1 priority.”
Ms. McCauley said the team’s motto is “promises made, promises kept.”
”We promised to keep taxes down, and we have,” she said.
She listed promises kept:
• To get the mercury out,;
• Sewer systems for various neighborhoods;
• A railroad Quiet Zone, and freight trains no longer blast horns:”
• To get the Route 206 bypass built, “and it’s underway;”
• To work with Somerset County to build “a premier recreational facility at the old depot, and the clean-up is in progress, with the first ballfields coming next year,” she said.
