NORTH BRUNSWICK — A North Brunswick Township High School teacher is charged with engaging in a sexually explicit conversation online with a 14-year-old boy, according to police.
According to a press release from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey, Special Education teacher Cara E. Conroy, 33, who lives in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick Township, was arrested and charged Thursday with one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said that Ms. Conroy allegedly talked online with a 14-year-old boy about engaging in sexual acts with each other on March 5.
The boy was not a special education student, according to police.
Ms. Conroy was arrested and charged following an investigation by North Brunswick Detective Mike Braun and Middlesex County Investigator Melissa Terpanick.
According to police, the boy’s mother learned about the online conversation and contacted authorities.
Ms. Conroy has worked for the North Brunswick School District since Sept. 1, 2005. According to the high school’s website, she worked as a teacher in the school’s Learning Center.
She was charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and faces between 5-10 years in prison, according to prosecutor spokesman Jim O’Neill.
Ms. Conroy has been suspended from her position at the school without pay, according to police.
Officials at the school and in the district refused to comment on the case Monday.
She remains lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $75,000 bail, according to jail officials.
The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call either Investigator Terpanick at 732-345-3600 or detective Braun at 732-247-0922, extension 314.
