No injuries were reported Thursday night after firefighters quickly extinguished a house fire at 16 Peter Avenue in Kendall Park.
According to police, the fire broke out at 5:09 p.m. in the rear of a home in the Kendall Park section of the township.
Arriving police officers and firefighters observed heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the building.
The residents of the home were able to escape to safety before firefighters arrived on the scene, police said.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
Kendall Park Fire Chief Chris Perez credited an aggressive attack by firefighters with containing the blaze.
The home had heavy smoke damage but most of the fire damage was contained to the rear of the structure, police said.
The residents are currently staying with friends because the home is not habitable, according to police.
Crews from Kendall Park, Monmouth Junction, Kingston, Franklin Park, North Brunswick, and Plainsboro Fire Companies responded to the blaze.
