HILLSBOROUGH: Garden club wins at state flower show

   Not even another snowstorm could keep Neshanic Garden Club members away from the Garden Club of New Jersey’s “From Sea to Shining Sea” flower show at the Raritan Convention Center in Edison on the Feb. 12th weekend.
   They received many blue, red, yellow and white ribbons at the show. In a club effort, Marion Nation, Jean Stives, Ali Van Cleef, Carmella Shepley and Barbara and Don Devitt sailed away with 3rd place for a window display titled “Come Sail Away.”
   Neshanic Garden Club members Marion Nation and Diana Reinhardt won first- and second-place ribbons, respectively, in the Horticulture Division for Pinus strobes White Pine. Janet Gibson with an honorable mention.
   For Picea pungens Blue Spruce, Russ Gibson won 1st and Janet Gibson 2nd. For Picea abies Norway Spruce, Ms. Reinhardt took 2nd, Marion Nation 3rd and Barbara Majewski an honorable mention.
   Magnolia grandiflora Southern Magnolia won a 3rd place for Ms. Reinhardt, along with a 2nd place for Ilex meserveae ‘Blue Girl’ holly, a 2nd place for Ilex ‘Nellie’ R Steven, and 1st places for Juni pecus virginiana eastern red cedar and Pinus nigra Austrian pine.
   Ms. Majewski received a 2nd place and Ms. Nation received a 3rd for Ilex opaca American holly. Ms. Nation also received an honorable mention for Thuja occidentalis arborvitae, Arline Pagliaro a 1st for Cedrus atlantica Atlas cedar and Barbara Majewski 2nd. Barbara Majewski also received 3rd place for yew. In the flowering branches category, Arline Pagliaro received a 3rd for forsythia and an honorable mention for flowering quince.
   Under the artistic crafts section, Arline Pagliaro received a 3rd place in the category “Swirling Waters.” She also won an honorable mention for “Nature’s Waterscaping” and Nancy Smith won 1st place. In the category “Splashes,” Arline Pagliaro won an honorable mention.
   In the photography section, Robert Geremia won a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention. Jeannie Geremia won a 2nd and two honorable mentions. Marion Nation won two 1st-place ribbons and three honorable mentions.
   Five Neshanic Garden Youth received first place ribbons. They were Annika West, Helana Polk, Harnan Singa, Adam Hook, and Julianna Bongiovanni. Second-place ribbons were received by Benjamine West, Jamie Cridge, Keiri Shuyama, Mikayla Shepherd, Tevleen Singh and Abigail Goldman. Omkar Shiende received a third-place ribbon.
   The club’s next endeavor will be an afternoon tea and basket auction, along with door prizes, on Tuesday, April 29, at 3 p.m. at the Royce Brook Golf Club on Hamilton Road in Hillsborough.
   Bruce Crawford, director of Rutgers Gardens, will demonstrate the “how to” of making gardens “pop” with containers filled with unusual plants and vegetable combinations. He will bring a selection of plants for sale.
