South Brunswick Police are investigating a theft Monday afternoon in which possibly two suspects allegedly scammed an elderly couple out of money and jewelry.
According to police, just before 2 p.m. Monday, a Kendall Park couple in their 80s reported that a male came to their front door on Savage Road.
The man explained a neighbor was having a fence installed and that he was from the gas company.
The suspect reportedly said he needed them to come outside to show where the work was going to be conducted.
Police said the man then led the couple to the backyard and spoke with them for 15 minutes.
He then returned to the front of the house and got into a white car that was parked in the homeowner’s driveway.
The couple, however, said the vehicle was not in the driveway when they first went into the back yard.
After the man left, the wife went inside her home and observed her purse was open and money missing, police said.
She then went to the bedroom and observed it to be ransacked.
Police said the suspects stole a large amount of antique silver handcrafted jewelry valued at $50,000.
Police believe that a second suspect entered the victim’s home while they were in the backyard and stole the items.
The victims said they only saw one suspect and described him as a white male between 26-30 years old, 5-foot-8-inches inches tall with a thin build and short, dark brown hair.
He was reported as wearing dark clothing with a black baseball cap with white lettering “GAP.”
The suspect’s vehicle was described as being an older white four door.
