HAMILTON — The township will hold the first of a series of instructional workshops on the building of rain barrels on March 26.
The workshops will be held in the basement meeting room of the Hamilton Township Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshop will show participants how to build their own rain barrel and learn how to install it at home, step by step.
Rain barrels are placed under a gutter’s downspout in order to collect rainwater. These barrels can collect about 50 gallons of water, which residents can use water their lawn, flowers, shrubs, or trees. Harvesting rainwater for such uses can help save money to reduce residents’ water bills and help reduce flooding in local rivers and streams.
Residents can participate in the workshop at a cost of $25 per barrel, which includes the necessary hardware for assembling a rain barrel. Hamilton Township will be offsetting the barrel fee for this workshop with grant funding. The program is sponsored collaboratively by the township, Sustainable Jersey and Rutgers – New Jersey Agriculture Experiment Station.
Following the March 26 workshop, two additional workshops will be held on Tuesday, April 15 and Wednesday, May 28, both with same meeting time and location in the library, located at 1 Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. Way.
The workshop is open to Hamilton residents only, and space is limited. For registration and more information about rain barrels, visit www.water.rutgers.edu.
